What to do right now
- Stay safe. Keep off the roof, especially when it's wet or windy, and keep clear of sagging, water-stained ceilings.
- Limit the damage inside. Move furniture and electronics, put down buckets and towels, and turn off power to any light fixture that's dripping.
- Document everything. Photograph stains, drips and anything visible on the roof from the ground, and note the date and time.
- Call a roofer. Many leaks can be stopped with a temporary cover until a permanent repair is made — ask the roofer about this when you call. Not in Katy proper? Check whether your ZIP is covered.
- Storm damage? Report it to your insurance company and read our storm damage roof repair guide before signing anything.
Common roof repairs in Katy
Missing or lifted shingles
Strong gusts can break the seal strip that holds shingles down. Once lifted, they let wind-driven rain under the roof covering.
Flashing leaks
Metal flashing around chimneys, walls, skylights and valleys is a common leak point when it loosens, corrodes or the sealant fails.
Pipe boots and vents
Rubber collars around plumbing vents crack with sun exposure, letting water run down the pipe into the attic.
Debris and limb damage
Falling branches during storms can puncture shingles and decking — something to check after any major wind event.
Repair or replace?
A repair usually makes sense when the damage is limited to one area and the rest of the roof is in good condition. Replacement starts to make more sense when:
- Damage shows up on several slopes of the roof, not just one spot.
- Shingles are brittle, curling or losing a lot of granules across the roof.
- There are repeated leaks in different places.
- The decking under the shingles is soft or rotted.
- An insurance adjuster has approved a full replacement after a storm.
Ask the roofer to show you photos of what they found and explain why they recommend a repair or a replacement. If replacement is on the table, our Katy roof replacement guide covers materials, HOA approval and what a good estimate includes. Unsure what you're looking at? A roof inspection gives you a written baseline.
Questions to ask the roofer
- What exactly failed, and can you show me photos?
- Will you match the existing shingles? If not, what are the options?
- Is this repair covered by a workmanship warranty, and for how long?
- Can you provide a certificate of insurance before starting?

Permits and HOAs
Katy spans parts of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties, and many "Katy" addresses sit outside city limits. If your home is inside City of Katy limits, the City of Katy permit office is the place to confirm whether your repair needs a permit. Master-planned communities often have architectural rules for roof materials and colors, so check with your HOA before any visible change.
Frequently asked questions
How fast can a roofer come out for a leak in Katy?
It depends on the company and how busy roofers are — after a big storm, schedules fill quickly. Call (831) 300-2416 and ask the roofer you're connected with about their earliest availability and whether they can put a temporary cover on the leak.
Can a small leak wait?
Small leaks tend to get worse and can damage insulation, drywall and decking long before they're obvious. It's worth having it looked at soon, especially before the next round of rain.
Will insurance pay for a roof repair?
Coverage depends on your policy and on what caused the damage. Sudden storm damage is handled differently from wear and tear. Your policy and your insurer are the authority here — see our Texas roof claim guide.
